Sierra Valley is located on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada encircled by the towns of Sierraville, Loyalton, and Portola. It is the largest expanse of mountain meadow in the state, and its wetland habitats support a variety of breeding species. We can expect to see nesting Sandhill Cranes and a number of different waterfowl. If we are lucky, Willets, Wilson’s Snipe, Long-billed Curlew, American Avocet, and Black-necked Stilts will be calling and nesting. From the sagebrush areas Savannah, Vesper, and Brewer’s Sparrows should be singing along with Sage Thrashers and Green-tailed Towhees. In marsh areas, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Marsh Wren, and maybe even an American Bittern can be seen. There is even a chance for Virginia Rail and Sora. This is truly a unique and interesting area to explore. Bring lunch, drink, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Birding will be mostly by car with a couple of short walks. This trip is limited to 10 participants. Contact Dale starting May 20 to reserve a place. Meeting spot will be given when registering.
