The evening’s program:
Sentinel Sites for Nature — Monitoring Biodiversity, Animal Movement, and Climate Change in California
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is working with several partners to establish a network of Sentinel Sites to monitor ecosystems and wildlife on public lands and inform land management in the face of climate change and other stressors. Each sentinel site hosts a series of weather and soil sensors for climate monitoring, suites of wildlife cameras and acoustic sensors for biodiversity monitoring, and a Motus station to monitor tagged animal movement. Whitney and Levi will provide a detailed look at what a Sentinel Site is, what components are required vs recommended and how NGOs can be involved. They will provide some preliminary data collected during the first few field seasons, with a focus on field sites in and around the Sierra Foothills.
Whitney Albright is a Senior Environmental Scientist with the CDFW and has an M.S. in Forestry from University of Washington, and a B.S. in Meteorology from University of Oklahoma.
