Program: Raptor ID with Ed Pandolfino

The Central Valley of California is a winter paradise for raptors, hosting the greatest diversity and abundance of winter raptors in North America. Sixteen different species of hawks, eagles, and falcons are regularly found in the winter and one can see all 16 within an hour’s drive from Auburn. Ed will provide tips on how to find and identify these raptors. This talk will be helpful both for beginning and intermediate birders. BRING BINOCULARS, they will help. There WILL be a test (relax, self-graded) so bring a pen or pencil.

Ed Pandolfino received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Washington State University. He has served as president of Western Field Ornithologists, vice-president of the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory, and on the boards of the Institute for Bird Populations and the Sierra Foothills Audubon Society. He is a former regional editor of North American Birds and is currently on the editorial board of Central Valley Birds. He is co-author of Birds of the Sierra Nevada: Their Natural History, Status, and Distribution from the University of California Press and Sacramento Breeding Birds: A Tale of Two Atlases and Three Decades of Change from the Central Valley Bird Club. He has published dozens of papers on the status, distribution, and behavior of western birds.
