WHY WE LOVE SANDHILL CRANES
Presented by Paul Tebbel
Most Northern California birders know the call of the Sandhill Crane and can easily pick one out in the farm fields of Lodi and elsewhere in the Central Valley. This presentation will take you deep into the lives of Sandhill Cranes through descriptions of their unique behaviors and annual life cycles. You’ll learn how to tell adults from juveniles; how to tell apart the subspecies; and more about their wonderful and unique calls. Since these cranes nest in remote wetlands and can be hard to study in the wild, considerable time will be spent discussing their nesting and raising of young.
Paul is a retired nonprofit administrator who ran the National Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary on the Platte River for 11 years (1995–2006). He is known for giving very entertaining workshops on Sandhill Crane behavior at Western Crane Festivals for the past 30 years. He is considered an expert on crane behavior but otherwise calls himself a mediocre birder.
