Free/drop-in welcome | Suitable for all ages — great for families!

Sierra Foothills Audubon Society is teaming up with Grass Valley Charter School for an unforgettable afternoon featuring two live birds of prey: a Swainson’s Hawk and a Harris’s Hawk. Students will lend a hand with setup, hospitality, and takedown as part of their service program—a partnership that reflects our shared commitment to connecting people of all ages with the natural world.

Wildlife biologist and author Linda Tuttle-Adams will join licensed raptor rehabilitator and educator Kim Franza for a lively presentation featuring a retired falconry Harris’s Hawk and a non-releasable, human-imprinted Swainson’s Hawk transferred from the UC Davis California Raptor Center for educational programs. Through PowerPoint visuals, personal stories, and plenty of audience questions, Linda and Kim will share fascinating insights into the lives, behaviors, and conservation of these remarkable raptors.

Whether you’re a lifelong birder or someone who’s always wanted to look a hawk in the eye (from a respectful distance!), you’ll have the chance to learn from experienced educators while meeting these avian ambassadors up close. There’s something unforgettable about seeing a raptor in person—their keen eyes, impressive wings, and quiet confidence have a way of leaving even seasoned birders in awe. We hope you’ll join us for an afternoon of learning, curiosity, and a few “wow” moments along the way.

Parking: Available in the rear school parking lot off Colfax Avenue, between Back Porch Market and Diego’s Restaurant. Please follow the signs to the presentation area. Drop-offs may also be made at the front of the building.
