This 2-mile loop trail on the preserve’s 50 acres is home to many resident and wintering riparian and blue oak/gray pine bird species, as well as waterfowl in the ponds of the old hydraulic diggings. The trail has a 200’ elevation change and would probably be rated slightly strenuous, but we will be walking at a “birders’ pace,” so it should not be too difficult (this 78-year-old can manage it without issue). Please contact Rudy if the weather is questionable. To reach the preserve, turn north onto Mooney Flat Road from Highway 20 west of Penn Valley. The parking lot is on the left a few tenths of a mile down Mooney Flat Road. There’s no longer a sign, so take it slowly. There are no facilities on the property and parking is somewhat limited, so carpooling is recommended. Call if in doubt about the weather.
